I tried several times in the last weeks to write something original on the celebration that is taking place today 17th March 2011: 150th Anniversary of Unification of our Country, but I wasn’t able to do it.
Every word I wrote, it sounded a bit old fashionated or rethorical to me. Maybe because patriotism is quite a new feeling for us Italians.
Shocked by WWII, when important symbols of Italian history like the Roman emblems and the “Tricolore”(our Flag) were used to support a dictatorship, Italians- for more than sixty years- have proudly shown the National Flag only during the football matches.
But this time it seems different. This feeling to be a Nation, 20 regions each one very different from the other, unique, but at the same time unified, is conquering the heart of all of us.
Today we proudly celebrate this very important day, the day when, 150 years ago, our Country became a Nation named ITALIA.
Buon Compleanno bella Signora! Buon Compleanno Italia!
“Know’st thou the land where the lemon-trees bloom,
Where the gold orange glows in the deep thicket’s gloom,
Where a wind ever soft from the blue heaven blows,
And the groves are of laurel and myrtle and rose?”
